WHATSAPP has announced a major change to group chats.

The messaging app is introducing Communities, which are basically big groups that contain WhatsApp group chats within them.

They enable people to bring together separate groups under one umbrella in order to keep them more organised.

For instance, if you have multiple group chats linked to your family or a sports team you play for, you can arrange them into a community.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, which owns WhatsApp, said: “Communities makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels, and more.”

Groups are one of the most popular ways to chat inside the Meta-owned app.

But having multiple Groups can sometimes be chaotic – and hard to keep track of.

Communities aims to make this process easier and has been in development for months.

According to WhatsApp, Communities allow people to send updates to their entire Community in a single message.

Communities will also contain powerful new tools for admins, including announcement messages that are sent to everyone and control over which groups can be included.

WhatsApp begins rolling out Communities today and it will be available to everyone over the next few months.

The chat app is also introducing the ability to create polls in chats, allowing people to quickly vote on an opinion or decision.

In addition, it is expanding the number of people who can take part in a video call to 32 participants.
